ANDEAN FESTIVITIES
Peru's culture is one and many at the same time. Modern-day Peruvians are heirs to traditions of civilizations that flourished for centuries before the arrival of the Europeans. A never-ending series of festivals and events throughout the year bring bright colours and flavours to everyday life. From vibrant dances to profound religious acts of devotion, these celebrations fill Peruvian life with passion and happiness.

Inti Raimy, The Sun Festival (2 days/ 1 night) During the Inca Empire, the Inti Raymi was the most important ceremony celebrated in Cusco. It took place in current main plaza and it was held during Winter Solstice. The ceremony lasted for nine days and was filled with colorful dances and processions, as well as animal sacrifices to thank Pachamama and to ensure a good cropping season. The last Inti Raymi with the Inca Emperor's presence was carried out in 1535, after which the Spanish and the Catholic priests banned it. In 1944, a historical reconstruction (theatrical representation ) of the Inti Raymi was created and since then it has been taking place at Sacsayhuamán, two kilometers from its original celebration in centralCusco) on June 24 of each year.
