The Yucatan Peninsular is famous for many things, its beaches, Mayan ruins and wildlife to name but a few.
On this tantalising Peninsular you are accosted by a mash of progress verses history. In locales such as Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, you’ll find grandiose constructions vying for first prize in the uber–resort race. The ‘beautiful people’ frequent the pristine beaches and modern music fills the streets.
Across the way, near Merida, lies Chichen Itza, one of the seven modern wonders of the world. Here, you can get lost in one of the best restored remnants of the ancient Mayan Civilisation. Dating back over 1000 years, Chichen Itza was once the most powerful city in the Mayan world. The culture itself continues to thrive today. Three to four million people still practice many of the ancient traditions and speak ancient dialects instead of Spanish.
In between antique and contemporary Mexico lies incredible nature. There’s lush jungle to explore, deep natural sinkholes to dive in, beaches to relax on and tropical islands where you can really get into the swing of Carribean life.
So whether you’d rather curl up in a hammock with a tequila sunrise or climb inside an ancient pyramid and release your inner archaeologist, you will be spoilt for choice.
