"As I set off on my travels with a one way ticket to Mexico, I had no idea that I would be setting off on a 19 month adventure, taking in 15 Latin American countries and the greatest experiences of my life."
An individual highlight is so difficult for me to choose as every destination offers a completely unique but incredible experience. The culture, beaches and ancient ruins of Central America are not to be missed, and I would highly recommend a multi-country holiday to take in all the different splendours on offer. My highlight of Central America though, has to be Guatemala. With beautiful little towns like Antigua, full of cobbled streets, friendly people, tiny tiendas (shops) and impressive volcanoes, you really can see why it is becoming a hot spot for travellers wanting to embrace the culture and learn a bit of Spanish. To the west lies the stunning Lake Atitlan, where all you can do is relax, marvel at the picturesque views and take in the culture of the local indigenous villages and colourful markets. And if you enjoy visiting ancient civilisations, then the mighty Mayan ruins of Tikal, set in the jungle with an abundance of curious monkeys, really cannot be missed!
I really do have to sit on the fence when it comes to deciding on my favourite place in South America. My highlights would be the wildlife in the Galapagos and Amazon, the fun loving people and colonial towns of Colombia, Andean treks and Machu Picchu ruins in Peru, Lake Titicaca and the pristine salt flats of Uyuni in Bolivia, the wine region of Chile and the outstanding Iguazu Falls in Argentina would have to top my list.
In my opinion, South America provides the perfect combination of culture, history, diverse landscapes, nature, thrill seeking excursions and natural beauty to become the perfect destination for any traveller or holiday maker. There is constant excitement in the air which is only enhanced by the incredible people and their culture. Any tourist on any budget can have the best experiences of their lives.
