Imagine yourself drifting down a narrow, winding creek surrounded by a lush, endless, sea of tropical greenery; and all that separates you from the deep black Amazon waters is a canoe hand-carved out of a single tree trunk. As you manoeuvre around a bend something unidentified crashes off into the underbrush and you catch a glimpse of two magnificent Blue and Yellow Macaws startled into flight. Just a snapshot of the Sacha Lodge experience!

Day 1: Arrival: Quito - Coca - Sacha Lodge

From Quito, we embark on a 30-minute fight over the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Andes Mountains and then down 8,500 ft (2,600 meters) into the Amazon Basin to Coca (Flight not included in tour cost).

A short lunch at Sacha's private house is enjoyed before being taken down to the docks, where Sacha’s own covered, motorized canoe will be waiting to start on a spectacular journey down the Napo River.

Upon arrival to Sacha’s 5000 acre (2,500 hectares) private reserve, a 30-minute walk on a raised boardwalk will lead guests to Lake Pilchicocha.  Here, board dugout canoes with native paddlers that will carry guests across the lake to Sacha Lodge.

On arrival, you may wish to take a swim in the Lake, before a short expedition where we bird watch from the lodge's mini tower, and visit the butterfly house where we can marvel at the beautiful colours on display.

After dinner, you may either take a night walk through the rainforest, or a canoe ride on the lake in search of caimans.

Day 2: Sacha Lodge: Liana Chica/Grande

This morning, we will trek the Liana Chica to the 36 metre high, 275 metre long canopy walk, where we can view the spectacular rainforest canopy and the many different species of vibrantly coloured birds that occupy it. With observation points on two of the three towers, we will have plenty of time to admire our surroundings.

We continue onto the
Liana Grande, where we hike through terra firma and igapo forest habitats where our guides will explain how the medicinal plants have been used in their culture for hundreds of years.

After lunch, we have the choice of a leisurely hike along the River Napo, or the more challenging Leoncillo trail to search for the elusive dusky titi monkey.

At the end of both trails, the canoe is waiting to take us back to the lodge where we overnight.

Day 3: Sacha Lodge: Lake Largatococha

After breakfast, we hike along the
Lagartococha trail where we can learn about the trees where the natives believe the spirits of their ancestors live, and the mysterious dwende or "devil-man" of the forest.

On arrival at Lake Lagartococha, we take a tranquil canoe ride through the natural swamp, where on the other side, a walk may give you the opportunity to spot squirrel monkeys playfully jumping through the trees.

After lunch at the lodge, we will attempt to fish for piranhas, before embarking on a silent canoe ride through the flooded Amazon rainforest. We have a good chance of being surrounded by groups of squirrel, capuchin and howler monkeys; as well the possibility of seeing the shy river otter or well camouflaged three-toed sloth.

We arrive at Sacha's 135 foot wooden tower built around an old Kapok tree, where we watch the sun set with incredible views of Mount Sumaco and possibly the snow-capped mountains of the Andes.

Leaving just after sunset, we return to the lodge, paddling our way through the symphony of frogs and insects, whilst still on the lookout for caimans!

Day 4: Departure: Sacha Lodge - Coca - Quito

After breakfast, we take our final journey along the boardwalk back to the river, where the canoe will take us back to Coca for the return flight to Quito
(Flight not included in tour cost).
