The Most Romantic Proposal Locations in South America

Sydney, 8 February 2018 – An average of 6 million couples worldwide will become engaged on Valentine’s Day, using this significant gesture to celebrate the date.South America stands as a forerunner for those ‘popping the question’ on foreign shores, seeing a dramatic rise in couples travelling there with romantic intention. From proposals to weddings to honeymoons, the endlessly stunning continent has rapidly become the set for many couple’s milestone events.

“Latin America has changed substantially in terms of infrastructure, safety and offerings – it now appeals to all kinds of travelers. The pure beauty and passion of Latin America has always been a draw card, however now with this infrastructure in place it

is no longer perceived as a destination only for the adventurous” co-founder of Chimu Adventures, Greg Carter, states.

“In recent years, we have hosted many couples heading off to propose and Valentine’s Day has been the most popular time, not only due to the auspicious date but also because it is an excellent time to visit South America as it is bathed in fantastic weather and alive with festivals” says Carter. Pooling their expertise, Chimu Adventures’ destination specialists chose their top locations to propose in South America.

Dreamy Romantics: Cartagena, Colombia

Chimu’s Cartagena Discovery hosts guests at The Ananda Boutique Hotel, located centrally with city views from the rooftop jacuzzi. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site of cobbled streets winding between colourful colonial architecture, against the backdrop of the Caribbean. The Colombian tale of forbidden romance, Love in the Time of Cholera, was apparently set here. Forget about a proposal by letter like the novel’s Florentino and instead dip into the shade of the colourful bougainvillea to drop to one knee.

Outdoors Adventurers: Torres del Paine, Patagonia, Chile

Chimu’s Essence of Chile incorporates an all-inclusive 4-day retreat at Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa in Torres del Paine where a massage, sparkling wine, luxury bath and surprise gift are part of the stay. Navigating South America’s finest national park is not always easy; expect to travel by foot, boat and even horseback. But for the loved-up adventurous pair, what could be more inspiring for a proposal than spending the day in striking mountain scenery before returning to luxury to lounge fireside with a glass of deep-crimson Carménère? The spa with a view is pretty inviting too.

City Lovers: San Telmo, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Experience the ‘Paris of the South’ on a Buenos Aires stopover – rumour has it that San Telmo trumps the French capital on the romance scales. There’s more to the oldest barrio in Buenos Aires than tango; the narrow streets hold stories of industry, poverty and later art as its air became more bohemian. Today, the scene is alive with restaurants, dancehalls and galleries. As dusk falls, sultry couples showcase their tango moves. Find a balcony overlooking the cobbled walkways, soak up the atmosphere and the question may arise.

Beach Dwellers: Ilha Grande, Brazil

Ilha Grande is a remote island, accessible by boat from Rio de Janeiro. Chimu can organise an Emerald Coast exploration, leaving couples to focus on each other. The lack of cars, development and signal combined with the island’s location creates a breezy castaway vibe (it was previously a pirate hideout) that contrasts to Rio’s intensity. The most revered stretch of white sand is Lopes Mendes beach where romantics can express their love before catching the ferry back to the island’s main town, Vila do Abraão, for a few celebratory caipirinhas.
