The business was born in 2004 on the premise of fully flexible, bespoke, guaranteed Latin America itineraries and, later, small ship polar expedition cruises. Clients are designated one Destination Specialist from start to finish, building trust from the outset. Their Destination Specialist has lived or travelled Latin America’s contours extensively; they know the mechanics and will work with the client to create a bespoke itinerary according to the client’s travel style, budget, expectations and concerns. Itinerary logistics are adjustable, and all international/domestic flights, hotels, activities, transfers and travel insurance are booked with the one Destination Specialist. This business design ensures Chimu have full control over each booking – issues are attended to personally and direct feedback can be relayed.
November 2020 sees Chimu, in partnership with Intrepid, launch their own Antarctic operations aboard their own ship, the Ocean Endeavour. This is an ambition achieved for Chimu, enabling them to run small ship expeditions to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands according to their stringent quality and security measures. Chimu Co-founder Chad Carey explains: “Our own Antarctic ship means that we can ensure full visibility over operations, just as we do in Latin America. We have hand-selected the expedition team aboard in terms of their knowledge, expertise and polar experience to maximise the security, well-being and enjoyment of every passenger.”
Key sustainability initiatives are in place. Chimu will be establishing an industry first with climate neutral Antarctic expeditions by carbon offsetting and neutralising every departure on this ship. Carbon offsetting projects supported through this include Rainforest Rehab in Malaysian Borneo who replant trees and avoid deforestation of the natural jungle by the prevention of palm oil plantations. Plastic reduction measures aboard the Ocean Endeavour include no plastic straws, the provision of soap and shampoo dispensers in guest cabins, the supply of a reusable water to refill at water stations, and a vision to eliminate the use of plastic entirely. All waste will be taken out of Antarctica with the ship and Chimu are working with SeaGreen on recycling initiatives and waste minimisation in the gateway city of Ushuaia.
For those wanting to travel in the 2019/2020 Antarctic season, Chimu have limited availability on a select number of their Chimu Exclusive Cruises. Chimu have been running these charter cruises for many consecutive years and each one is conducted in line with their high standards of quality and security.
