New experiences are ahead and after enjoying a nutritious buffet breakfast, get ready for a trek through terra firma forest into the Tambopata National Reserve towards Lake Sandoval. Here you will understand why Madre de Dios is called the biodiversity capital of Peru, while learning about the Reserve’s conservation efforts and the lake’s formation. Navigate by dugout canoe across this mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), blue and yellow macaws (Ara ararauna), the red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus), black caiman (Melanosuchus niger), and one of the world’s largest fresh water scaled fish, the paiche (Arapaima gigas).
Return to the lodge for lunch, and later the Canopy Walkway and Anaconda Walk await you. A 25-minute ride by motorized canoe takes you to the Canopy Walkway Interpretation Centre where you will learn about its construction and the conservation projects. Ascend one of the two 95-foot towers (30 metre) and cross the 7 suspension bridges that connect the treetop observation platforms. The walk takes around 1.5 hours and you will get to enjoy breathtaking vistas not possible from ground level. Look out for white-throated toucans (Ramphastos tucanus), woodpeckers, trogons, squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) and the three-toed sloth (Choleopus hoffmani) as well as strangler fig trees and orchids.
After descending from the canopy, you take the 15 minute Anaconda Walk along the 200-metre wooden bridge over the swamps (aguajales) and wetlands. You will learn about the fauna and flora of this flooded ecosystem. You may see various species of amphibians, birds and mammals as well as abundant flora and marshland trees.
At night get ready for an adventure during the Hidden Rainforest excursion, where you will explore the Amazon rainforest and encounter nocturnal animals who display intriguing behaviour patterns, and enhanced senses as adaptation mechanisms. Listen to the nocturnal sounds of the rainforest and explore this hidden world.
End your day with dinner back at the lodge.
