  • Get the opportunity to witness unique creatures like reindeer and polar bear in their natural environments.

  • Witness some of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes in the world as you kayak through deep fjords and bear witness to immense glaciers.

Enjoy a guided group tour of colourful Longyearbyen, the capital of Svalbard. Boarding is scheduled for the late afternoon.

This Norwegian settlement is a unique little town. While the arctic environment is dominant, it is also a surprisingly cosmopolitan place, with art galleries, pubs, long wine lists at restaurants, stores and a mini-mall. Longyearbyen is often called an antidote to the stress of modern day life and is a prime destination for adventure travellers.

Embarkation in Longyearbyen

Cruise northwards along the west coast of Spitsbergen. There's ample time ashore for hiking on the lush tundra among the summer flowers and observing remarkable bird cliffs. As we work our way along the north coast, we explore rarely visited places in search of the mighty polar bear.

From zodiacs we enjoy magnificent views of sweeping glaciers winding their way into the sea. We may walk on smooth raised beach terraces to a superb viewpoint or hike in the mountains on the tundra where coloured wildflowers and lichen grow and where reindeer graze. We may visit trapper huts of yesteryear where Russians would hunt and survive the cold harsh winters, all the while remaining alert for wandering polar bears and their cubs. We might come face-to-face with the formidable pack ice of the Arctic ocean, keeping our eyes peeled for walrus feeding on clams or hauled out on the beach in wallows. We will listen to the cacophony of seabirds and see them feeding. If conditions allow, we may push north into the pack ice in hopes of finding polar bears ranging over the frozen landscape on the hunt for seals.

West Spitsbergen - Days 2 to 11

Crossing the Barents Sea to Kirkenes offers some good opportunity to encounter whales and certainly plenty of opportunities to photograph seabirds. You may enjoy final presentations from our team of experts, spend your time editing photos or simply relaxing and reflecting on the amazing memories you have made with your fellow passengers.

Crossing the Barents Sea

Arrive in the northeastern Norwegian town of Kirkenes where we will disembark the vessel. You will be transferred to the airport for flights home or onwards to new destinations.

Disembarkation in Kirkenes

We offer a range of flight options to meet your cruise. Contact us today to discuss.

1) Only using local guides and office staff to both maximise local employment opportunities and minimise carbon footprints. Local guides also ensure you benefit from the intimate knowledge, passion and culture of the country you’re visiting.

2) Where possible, using locally owned and operated boutique hotels to maximise the return to the local community.

3) Chimu’s “Pass it on” programme has provided funding to hundreds of local community projects in Latin America. Our aim is to empower local communities, helping them to develop their own infrastructure for the future. Since 2006, we have been working with Kiva (a well-known Non-Governmental Organisation), providing hundreds of loans to local businesses all over South America.

4) In our pre tour information we provide a range of tips and advice on how to minimise your impact on both local environments and communities.

5) Chimu Adventures’ offices also take a number of sustainability measures including carbon offsets for company vehicles and most staff travel. Chimu Adventure’s internal processes are also structures to create a paperless office and to reduce waste. There are also internal programmes to help staff minimise their carbon footprint such as our staff bike purchase assistance plan which encourages office staff to commute to work via bicycle. Currently almost half of our office based staff commute to work via bicycle.
