CRUISE ITINERARY

On arrival into Iquitos Airport you will be met by a crew member for the group transfer by private vehicle to Nauta, 95 kilometres from Iquitos, with a lunchbox provided for you to enjoy on the way. Before departing Iquitos there will be a panoramic tour of this bustling river city, the largest city in the Peruvian Rainforest. During the 20th century, the city attracted many Europeans immigrants who contributed to a period of great wealth, commercial, and social development.

Nauta is a small riverside town on the banks of the Marañon River and was the first city founded in the department of Loreto. It is here that you will board the Delfin at a private port on the shores of the Marañon River. After a VIP welcome, you will be shown to your suite with time to settle in before the first excursion by skiff to Marayali, an area populated by sloths, iguanas and anteaters as well as yellow-rumped caciques and egrets.

As the Delfin sets sail, you can enjoy fantastic panoramic views from the observation lounges located on the top deck whilst sipping on a cocktail made with regional fruits and Pisco, the national brandy liquor of Peru. Your naturalist guide will give an overview of the journey ahead including activities, route, highlights, wildlife and vegetation, geography and historical background.

In the afternoon we witness the “confluence of the 3 rivers” known as the “Union de los Rios”. The Ucayali River meets the Marañón River upstream of Iquitos to form what countries other than Brazil consider to be the main stem of the Amazon River. There are great photo opportunities as you witness your first Amazon Rainforest sunset.

There is a night jungle walk and a visit to a small village on the shores of the river where you can listen to interesting legends of the Amazon as you sit around a small campfire.
After dinner on board you can enjoy the stars from the top deck as the Delfin sails deeper into the Amazon.

Arrival in Iquitos & Embarkation

This morning we walk along the Fundo Casual jungle trail that takes us deep into the rainforest on terra firma (non-flooded forest) where your guide will point out the fascinating wildlife and vegetation of the Amazon.

This afternoon we cruise along the black water Yanayacu Pucate River, one of the most spectacular sites of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Your guide will point out the biodiversity of this region with its myriad of bird species, colourful butterflies and other insects, noisy monkey troops and pink and grey river dolphins. You have the opportunity to paddle board and swim in the river maybe alongside the elusive freshwater pink river dolphins.

Fundo Casual / Yanayacu Pucate River

Early this morning we cruise through the creeks and lagoons of Yanayaquillo, one of the best preserved and protected zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Your guide will explain the rich biodiversity of this region. This is also a popular dolphin feeding spot so you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins here.

After lunch the skiffs skim the Samiria River and its tributaries, where an abundance of wildlife hides in the deep rainforest, including blue and yellow macaws, scarlet macaws, toucans, umbrella birds, monkeys, river otters, capybaras and more.

Yanayaquillo / Samiria River

After breakfast we explore Nauta Caño Creek by skiff with its lagoons and dynamic, stunning panoramas. Cruising is the best way to experience the diversity of wildlife that populates the rivers and jungle habitats, quietly exploring marshes, streams and oxbows. There is also the opportunity to fish for the infamous piranha. There are 25 different species of piranha in the Amazon Basin, and contrary to popular legends, they feed on the flowers, fruit and outer covering of the trees standing in shallow water.

This evening sees us exploring Piraña Caño Creek that leads to a lagoon that is an ideal place to spend time in search of birds and playful monkeys. We then visit the community of San Francisco with a short skiff ride and jungle walk that takes us to meet local villagers who have called Amazonia their home for generations. Here we visit a market featuring amazing arts and crafts made by the local women.

As night approaches, your guide will take you on a night safari in search of caimans and nocturnal birds and animals.

Disembarking at the port of Nauta, Delfin’s ground crew will be waiting to take you by private vehicle back to the city of Iquitos.

On the way from Nauta back to Iquitos Airport, we visit the Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre of River Mammals (ACOBIA) where you will have the chance to meet and feed baby manatees and learn about these wonderful and docile creatures and why they are on the endangered species list. Other animals that have been rescued from capture for the intention of being turned into pets and other threatening conditions are also cared for at the centre. You may like to make a donation to this ambitious organisation and education centre.

At Iquitos Airport staff will be on hand to give you your boarding passes and assist with check in ready for your return flight to Lima.

Sustainability

Being environmentally accountable is a crucial part of our organisation. Chimu is currently striving towards using less paper, taking several initiatives to do so and tracking our progress along the way. Our goal: A paperless organisation. For this reason, all information given to you will be sent electronically. We encourage those who choose to travel with us to support our aspirations and actions and ask that you reconsider printing out documentation. To view these documents, you can download them to your iPad or portable computer before and during your trip.

Chimu is passionate and dedicated to sustainability measures and understands the crucial part sustainability plays within the tourism industry.

We use local guides and office staff to both maximise local employment opportunities and minimise carbon footprint. Local guides also ensure you benefit from the intimate knowledge, passion and culture of the country you’re visiting. Our guides are all highly qualified (most with university degrees) or equip with many years of experience and are paid above the standard wage. Whether it be our knowledgeable local guides, locally produced meals or the transport on tour, we do not use imported goods when local products are available. We aim to minimise our impact on the environment and give as much back as possible to the communities we work in.

Delfin Amazon Cruises has partnered with KUYAPA Foundation, engaging in a range of initiatives to protect the environment and support native communities. While many Amazon communities are largely self-sufficient, their remote locations severely limit access to basic necessities. Delfin offers support through donations of clothing, medical supplies and educational resources, as well as public works projects to improve community infrastructure. While visiting the many national parks, heritage sites, museums and landmarks our travellers are encouraged to explore whilst remaining culturally aware and sensitive. We further encourage you to buy appropriate souvenirs and discourage the buying of anything wrongfully made or taken from the environment i.e. shells and endangered species products. Information on how you can be environmentally conscious, and travel responsibly will be made available in our Travellers Guides and provided during your travels by guides and staff.
