Spanish Speaking Courses & Colonial Granada City

Overview

Take the time to embrace the culture and lifestyle of Nicaragua by living with the locals and learning the official language of Spanish. With classes tailored to meet individual learning needs and time constraints, your ability to speak the language will develop and improve dramatically, especially when immersed in it. You have the choice of standard accommodation in either a nearby hotel or a homestay with a local family for an authentic Nicaraguan experience.

ITINERARY INSPIRATION

You will be met at the International Airport, followed by a private transfer with a bilingual guide to the family homes coordinator at Viva Spanish School Institute. Staying with a Nicaraguan family will not only improve your Spanish but will open your eyes to a whole new culture and way of life. Spending time with the people of Nicaragua you will come to understand many cultural aspects and learn how to fit into local life. We recommend that all of our students, where possible, stay with a local family for at least some of their course. You will have your own room but share meals and family time together. While a homestay is not for everyone (the homestays have very basic comforts and are located in the heart of the city), it is generally a very enlightening and fulfilling experience for those who choose this option.

Arrival

Intensive Classes (20 hours per week). The classes are almost always one-on-one with the teacher (some exceptions for couples and groups). They also rotate the teachers, meaning that you will have one teacher for grammar and one teacher for conversation, two different teachers in any class. The change of teacher brings a fresh perspective and lengthens your attention span. The classes are carefully coordinated so that your learning process is not interrupted, but rather enhanced by this rotation. Classes are from 8am to 12pm. Afternoons are at leisure to spend time with the family.

Intensive Classes - Day 2 to 6

After breakfast with your family, you will have a private guided transfer from Managua to Granada City. Rest of the day is at leisure.

Managua to Granada City

Granada dates back to 1524 and is the oldest European settlement in the Americas. It is a beautiful city on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, with colonial buildings in pastel shades, historic churches and an 18th century fort. Central Park, the main plaza, is dominated by the colourful façade of the Cathedral of Granada that dates back to 1583. San Francisco is the oldest church in Central America and possibly the most striking building in Granada. La Merced is probably the most beautiful church in the city. Granada is a great base from which to explore the nearby Masaya and Mombacho Volcanoes, Lake Nicaragua and Ometepe Island.

Granada

The next few days are free for you to explore the city and the surrounding area on your own, and practice what your have learned with the locals.

Sustainability

Chimu Adventures undertakes a number of sustainability measures within its operations including:

1) Only using local guides and office staff to both maximise local employment opportunities and minimise carbon footprints. Local guides also ensure you benefit from the intimate knowledge, passion and culture of the country you’re visiting.

2) Where possible, using locally owned and operated boutique hotels to maximise the return to the local community.

3) Chimu’s “Pass it on” programme has provided funding to hundreds of local community projects in Latin America. Our aim is to empower local communities, helping them to develop their own infrastructure for the future. Since 2006, we have been working with Kiva (a well-known Non-Governmental Organisation), providing hundreds of loans to local businesses all over South America.

4) In our pre tour information we provide a range of tips and advice on how to minimise your impact on both local environments and communities.

5) Chimu Adventures’ offices also take a number of sustainability measures including carbon offsets for company vehicles and most staff travel. Chimu Adventure’s internal processes are also structures to create a paperless office and to reduce waste. There are also internal programmes to help staff minimise their carbon footprint such as our staff bike purchase assistance plan which encourages office staff to commute to work via bicycle. Currently almost half of our office based staff commute to work via bicycle.
