TRAVELLING TO Guyana & Suriname

Why visit? Tucked away in a wild and far-flung corner between Brazil and Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname can introduce you to some of the most untouched wilderness in the world. Immense areas of dense rainforest, wild waterfalls, vast mountain ranges and scenic lakes are some of the features making Guyana & Suriname hot spots for adventure travellers.

The “Guianas” region consists of three nations - Guyana, French Guiana & Suriname, which hug the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Amazon rainforest to the south.

Georgetown is the capital of Guyana and the most popular starting point for Guyana & Suriname tours. Located on South America’s North Atlantic coast, it is home to British colonial architecture and an array of historic monuments whilst also boasting a thriving food scene.

From Georgetown, your Guyana tour can take you to the Kaieteur Falls, one of nature’s finest spectacles being the world’s largest single-drop waterfall by volume.

Other Guyana must-dos for nature lovers include climbing the Surama Mountain in the centre of the country and walking across the savannah and through the rainforest to the Burro Burro River where you can also see some of the country’s most amazing wildlife.

Suriname is characterised by vast areas of tropical rainforest, Dutch colonial architecture and a fascinating melting pot of cultures.

How to get there? Generally, the easiest way for Australians to get to Guyana & Suriname is to fly to LA, connect to New York and then fly to Georgtown (Guyana) or Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport near Paramaribo (Suriname). Another, slightly longer option, is to fly via LATAM or QANTAS to Santiago and then connect to Georgetown.
