OVERVIEW
Traversing the Antarctic Circle, the last frontier of Earth! We leave Ushuaia, the southernmost city in Argentina, and travel south across the formidable Drake Passage. We will travel farther south from the South Shetland Islands into the Antarctic Peninsula's inlets and bays before crossing the well-known Gerlache Strait, which is home to towering peaks and glittering ice cliffs that rise straight out of the freezing ocean. This exquisitely stunning extraterrestrial terrain is characterized by icebergs, glaciers, mountains, and untamed snowfields. Our knowledgeable Captain and Expedition Leader will put out great effort to maximize the chances for White Continent exploration. We will make Zodiac landings to allow guests to set foot on land and experience penguin rookeries, breathtaking landscapes, and historical sites; however, wind, sea, and ice conditions will determine the precise locations we visit. Additionally, we aim to Zodiac cruise in scenic areas filled with enormous icebergs, whales, and seals. Our days will be spent exploring the area outside the ship, and our experienced onboard Expedition Team will be available to assist you at every turn to make the most out of your time on land, in addition to providing a variety of carefully designed lectures to improve your unparalleled expedition experience.
We journey further south from the Peninsula's "mainland," hoping to reach the Antarctic Circle at 66°33′ South—a destination that has evaded many of the great and ambitious explorers of the past. The greatest places to see the finest of Antarctica are always our goal, but our precise departure time from the Antarctic Circle will depend on the weather and ice conditions. Stunning views and landscapes are certain, no matter where Mother Nature leads us!
ITINERARY
After a friendly welcome at the airport and a transfer to your included hotel, take some time to unwind or explore the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia.
Our evening briefing is your opportunity to ask questions and meet some of your fellow explorers.
Spend your morning relaxing at the hotel, visiting a museum, or exploring the shops in Ushuaia, before our mid-afternoon escort to the ship. Our Expedition Team and ship staff will welcome you on board and get you settled in, followed by a safety and orientation briefing and our Captain’s welcome dinner. We’re on our way to Antarctica!
Join our Polar Experts as they share their vast knowledge of Antarctica, from its enchanting wildlife to its bold history. Participate in our pioneering Citizen Science program or sit back and take in this fabled journey while catching glimpses of rarely seen wildlife. Keep your binoculars handy to identify the many seabirds that escort our ship as we cross the Antarctic Convergence into Antarctica’s waters and noticeably cooler temperatures.
Heading south across the Bransfield Strait, we begin to see the breathtaking outline of the Antarctic Peninsula. Wildlife sightings, including penguins, whales, and fur seals, become more frequent, as do dramatic sculptural icebergs. With an extra day to explore, possibilities abound. We’ll look to visit historic sites like the huts at Damoy Point, keep an eye out for humpback whales in Wilhelmina Bay, and continue our twice-daily outings until we reach the crown jewel of this expedition, hoping to enter the jaw-dropping Lemaire Channel by New Year’s Eve. Weather permitting, we’ll cross the Antarctic Circle at 66°33’S, an achievement that will put you in rare company. We’ll raise a glass of bubbly to celebrate the achievement, before heading onward toward any number of historic and rarely visited British Survey bases, after which we turn back north.
We leave this magical place and make our way north,
once again crossing the legendary Drake Passage. We
have one last hurrah as we celebrate the conclusion
of our expedition with a special slideshow, passenger
photo contest, and a final celebratory meal together.
