OVERVIEW

Tambopata Research Centre is one of the most secluded lodges in the Amazon, offering frequent sightings of monkeys, macaws, and even jaguars due to the lack of human presence. Its remote location, minimal infrastructure, and resident researchers make it an ideal base for in-depth wildlife and nature exploration, especially of endangered species.

Highlights include:

Jaguar sighting - The four-and-half hour boat ride from Refugio Amazonas to Tambopata Research Centre is your best chance for a jaguar sighting.

Five distinct pristine habitats - Close and easy hikes to bamboo, flood plain, terra firma, palm and riverine rainforest habitats.

Macaw research and conservation - Much ground breaking macaw conservation research has been carried out from the centre and you are likely to have the chance during your stay to talk with macaw biologists, ecologists and other experts while they do fieldwork.

On this all-encompassing personalised itinerary, Chimu will provide travel logistics for your travel party for the duration of your journey, plus expert guides for all the major sightseeing as per itinerary. Each night you will stay in superior accommodation, handpicked by our experienced team for their creature comforts, convenient locations, and impeccable service.

For another exceptional Amazon experience check out the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Extension or Refugio Amazonas Extension.

ITINERARY

Arrival at Tambopata Research Centre

To begin your rainforest adventure, you will take a quick flight from Lima or Cuzco to the Amazonian city of Puerto Maldonado, in Southeastern Peru. Upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado Airport, a representative will greet you and accompany you on the journey to the lodge. You will be taken on a one-hour road trip, followed by a boat ride on the Tambopata River, to arrive at Tambopata Research Centre. During the trip, there will be a stop at the local office where you can repack your luggage, bringing only necessary items for the next four days.

*Guests are allowed to bring only one carry-on of a maximum of 15kg per person; all other luggage must be left in storage at the office.

Upon reaching the lodge, you will be warmly welcomed and given a brief orientation. After dinner, you have the option to participate in a night walk, where you can observe the animals that are active during the evening, but often difficult to spot. The nocturnal frogs, with their captivating shapes and colors, as well as interesting sounds, can be seen more easily.

Please note: The Peruvian Amazon is a very remote region. Cruise and lodge operators design transfer schedules to align with specific incoming and departing flights to maximise their operations. Frequent flight schedule changes can also complicate matters. We strongly advise consulting with your booking agent prior to confirming your flights to avoid any potential long delays and/or missed connections.

*Tambopata Research Center offers a variety of on-site activities and excursions that can be customized. The itinerary presented below is provided as an example and may be subject to changes depending on weather, availability, or your personal preferences.

Tambopata Activities Day 2

This morning you will have the chance to visit a very impressive clay lick. On most clear mornings of the year, dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on the river bank in a colourful spectacle that inspired a National Geographic cover story. Discretely located fifty meters from the cliff, we will observe Green-winged, Scarlet, and Blue-and-gold Macaws and several species of smaller parrots descend to ingest clay. This takes place at dawn when the lick is most active.

After lunch, we will go on a walk along a five-kilometre trail to get closer to the rainforest wildlife and witness mature trees, creeks and ponds. during this walk, we will search for monkeys; the most common being, Squirrel Monkey, Brown Capuchin, and Spider Monkeys.

Later in the evening, after dinner, scientists will provide a night lecture. This provides an in-depth look at the biology of macaws, their feeding habits, the theories for clay lick use, their breeding and feeding ecology, population fluctuations, and the threats to their conservation.

Tambopata Activities Day 3

Today, get ready to leave at dawn to explore our Rainforest Master Hike which will leave you with unforgettable memories. Due to their years of local experience, our Tambopata Research Centre guides know everything about the forest. They’ll spot the tiniest bird hiding in the canopy, the most elusive monkey, and the most spectacular plant life.

The afternoon will be free for you to relax around the lodge and listen to the wildlife that talks throughout the day.

Twilight descends early in the jungle and as the afternoon slips into evening, you will see one of the world’s most spectacular sunsets. Head out on sunset cruise downriver and watch the colors reflecting off the water while keeping an eye out for wildlife.

Departure

After breakfast, you will embark on a three-hour journey back to Puerto Maldonado for your departure flight. The trip includes a boat ride followed by a 1-hour road transfer to Puerto Maldonado. This provides a final opportunity to immerse yourself in the breathtaking natural scenery of the Tambopata National Reserve, offering a chance to spot a variety of wildlife along the way.
