The long established capital, Santiago, sits in the centre of the country. More European in feel than most Latin American cities, it is nonetheless a vibrant and bustling metropolis, nestled in a spectacular mountain location.  

The capital is just a short distance from the antiquated coastal city of Valparaíso, a port city that feels stuck in the 19^th Century with Victorian-era buildings clinging to steep hillsides.

North of Santiago is the Atacama Desert that spans unfathomable distances towards the Peruvian border. This barren, rocky, sun-baked expanse, the driest location on the planet, is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.

Chile's Lake District, south of Santiago, was once the realm of the fierce Mapuche tribe. Here, stunning temperate forests, deep blue lakes and towering volcanoes dominate the landscape.

Further south, a land of fjords and glaciers awaits. Chile's portion of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego's stunning National Parks, such as the popular Torres del Paine, boast awesome landscapes, glaciers and the enormous South American Ice Field.
