Arrival in Easter Island

UNESCO World Heritage Listed Easter Island is a remote volcanic island that lies in the Pacific Ocean some 3,700kms to the west of Chile. One of the most isolated places on earth and one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world, Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is famed for its archaeological sites that include around 900 moai statues. These carved human figures were created during the 10th-16th centuries and many are found resting on massive rock altars.

Easter Island Anakena Tour

Embark on a journey to the south coast to explore representative examples of unreconstructed platforms, starting with Ahu Vaihu in the picturesque bay of Hanga Te’e, and then moving on to Akahanga, believed to be the burial site of the renowned King Hotu Matua. Continue to Rano Raraku, the quarry boasting almost 900 stone statues, with 397 still positioned on the slopes of the extinct volcano, surrounding the crater lake.

Next, behold the grandeur of Ahu Tongariki, the most recent and largest restoration on the island, featuring 15 Moais. Drive towards the east coast to visit Ahu Te Pito Kura, known as the “Navel of the World.” Conclude your exploration with a visit to the beach of Anakena, adorned with restored Ahus Nau Nau and Ature Huke. Take advantage of the opportunity to bask in the warmth of the Pacific Ocean before returning to your hotel.

Note: This is a full day tour shared with a small group (maximum 20). It includes transfers and entrance fees.

Easter Island Orongo

We set off for the Orongo village which sits on the edge of the extinct volcano Rano Kau. The village which consists of 54 stone houses is believed to have been a ceremonial centre for the birdman culture from the 16th century until its abandonment in the mid-19th century. In addition to its incredible natural beauty, the site boasts a high number of petroglyphs depicting tangat manu - the birdman. This is a truly a magical place where the views will memorise you and the stories and legends will intrigue you.

Easter Island Ahu Akivi

We make our way to Ahu Akivi, the site adorned with seven impressive moai sculptures. Standing at nearly 4.5 meters tall, these statues are believed to symbolize the seven young explorers dispatched to survey the island before Horu Matu and his people arrived. Our journey also takes us to the Pun-a-Pau quarry, the origin of the Pukao cylindrical hats. Weighing between nine and twenty tonnes, these 1 to 2-meter cylinders were ingeniously rolled downhill to reach the moai sites.
