Ecuador

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mashpi Lodge - amazing! We booked a 2 night stay at Mashpi Lodge, through Chimu. The lodge is utterly incredible, and the level of service very, very good. Our only concern was that on the evening before our pick-up from Quito, we had not received confirmation of our pick-up time. Thankfully the hotel assisted us with some phone calls, and everything went smoothly from there. I would highly recommend including Mashpi in any itinerary for Ecuador - worth every dollar. And if you can, add another night so that you can really experience everything the Reserve has to offer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos This trip was amazing from start to finish. Mainland Ecuador offered a wealth of varying experiences from the vibrant cities and towns to a train ride through the Andes and massive volcanoes. My guide Diego was knowledgeable and fun and introduced me to the best of the food. The Galapagos was unique and the ability to swim with turtles, sea lions and penguins was really memorable. The guides clearly care about the wildlife there and the need to treat it with care and respect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Four different landscapes in two weeks! Ecuador is such a diverse country in South America, surpassing all expectations. In two weeks, we were able to experience Quito, the Galapagos Islands, the Amazon and the Andes. Four completely unique landscapes, all offering the most incredible scenery and hospitality. On arrival in Quito, you will immediately notice the sprawl of colourful buildings nestled into the lush green hills - all watched over by a huge statue of the Virgin Mary. We stayed at the luxury, boutique hotel Illa Experience which is in the peaceful and artistic San Marcos area. From here you can walk to all the sights. Recommend La Rhonda area if you fancy a few drinks in the evening. Our land-based experience in the Galapagos Islands staying on Santa Cruz and Isabela Island was a great way of experiencing lots of scenery and wildlife (think giant tortoises, marine iguanas, flamingos, sharks, sea turtles, boobies to name but a few) without staying on a boat. The safari style tents at Scalesia Lodge, Isabela were so luxurious but right in the middle of the forest, surrounded by the most lush vegetation. The hot water bottle in the bed at night was a great touch! The Amazon is an incredible experience in itself. The stage by stage journey of a flight from Quito to Coca, then a motorised canoe down the Napo River before trekking through the rainforest and boarding another canoe to Sacha Lodge lets you know that you are heading somewhere really remote. This lodge is just beautiful - rooms are set deep into the forest yet are so comfortable. Try the Amazon menu for a real taste of the jungle! Take advantage of all excursions - sunrise and sunset canopy climbs and a forest night walk were particular highlights. Most surprising were the Ecuadorian Andes. The colours were mind-blowing - vast blue skies and lush green mountains. Life is rural and slower up here, the roads are bumpy and windy but as you climb into the mountains and the air becomes crisp, it is all worth it. Staying at Hacienda Piman we enjoyed evenings chatting by the wood fire drinking delicious South American reds. This trip was just wonderful and everything ran like clockwork.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fascinating, engrossing and just good fun. We did two trips in Equador a Tren Equador 4 day trip up the Andes from Guayaquil to Quito and a 4 day trip to Sacha Lodge on the edge of the Amazon basin. The scenery on both trips was incredible the towering peaks of the Andes and the verdant vegetation and animals of the jungle. The staff and guides were knowledgeable, interesting and personable. There was an excellent range of activities such as the rose farm, cowboys, woodworking, devils nose train and the list can go on for the train trip. Sacha Lodge offered some fascinating activities such as walks, canoe rides, climbs up towers which showcased the plants and animals of the jungle. Two fantastic trips I would recommend to anyone.

Spanish is the official language of Ecuador but 13 Indigenous languages are spoken, the principal ones being Quichua in the Andes and Amazon and Jivaroan in the Amazon.

Ecuador is in fact one of the best places in Latin America to learn Spanish as Ecuadorian Spanish is spoken slowly and clearly.

The wildlife that you will see will depend on where your Ecuador travel takes you. Ecuador has a vast biodiversity that includes over 300 mammal species, 1,500 bird species and a huge array of reptiles and amphibians. The Galapagos Islands are home to many endemic species of birds and animals found nowhere else in the world and some only found on specific islands.

The best time to visit Ecuador will depend on the places that you plan to visit and the activities that you plan to include on your Ecuador travel. The highlands are best visited between June and September if your Ecuador tour includes hiking in the Andes; the Amazon is a year-round destination with the wet and dry seasons offering different experiences; the coast is best visited between January and May and the peak season for the Galapagos Islands is December to June.

Most South American countries have now recognized that tourism plays an important part in their economies and governments have taken great steps to change South America’s poor security image. Violent crime is rare in Ecuador.

To minimise security risks we recommend the following:

  • do not show any outward signs of wealth or wear expensive jewellery
  • keep your valuables in your hotel in safety deposit boxes
  • keep any valuables that you must carry with you hidden, as pickpockets can be present in crowded areas and around tourist areas
  • use only registered taxis with official identification
  • avoid going on your own to remote areas where tourists would not be expected to go
  • always keep your day pack and camera close to you and never leave them unattended
A pre-arranged visa is not required to enter Ecuador or the Galapagos for the following countries:
  • Australia
  • United Kingdom
  • The United States
  • Ireland
  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • European Union
  • South Africa
For other nationalities please visit the website of the relevant consulate.

Our Ecuador tours include breakfast daily and many other meals may also be included in your itinerary. As a rough guide for additional spending money based on having moderately-priced lunches and dinners and buying a few souvenirs at local markets, we suggest a budget of 25-30 USD per day per person.

No specific vaccinations are required for Ecuador travel, unless you are travelling from a country with risk of yellow fever, in which case proof of yellow fever vaccination is required. We do, however, recommend that you visit your doctor or a traveller’s medical centre for current information specific to those places that you will be travelling through.

As a general guide we recommend the following:

  • Hepatitis - Both A and B (twinrix)
  • Yellow Fever - Especially for jungle areas
  • Typhoid
  • Diphtheria
  • Cholera
  • Rabies (minimal risk)
  • Tetanus
  • Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)
In Ecuador the standard voltage is 120/127V and standard frequency is 60Hz. Power sockets are of types A and B.
