ITINERARY INSPIRATION

This morning you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Quito airport, where you will board a flight over the Andes to the town of Coca, located in the Amazon Basin. Enjoy a quick lunch in Sascha’s private house before being transferred to the dock where you will board a private canoe for a journey down the river to the Sascha Lodge properties. After a 30-minute hike through the rainforest, you will be met by native workers who will paddle you across the lake, arriving at Sacha Lodge.

Swim in Lake Pilchicocha, a refreshing swim after arriving may be just what you need after being in the equatorial heat. After settling in, you may choose to go to the birdwatching tower. The mini tower gives guests an excellent opportunity to view several species of birds and makes for a great place to watch the sunset. Another option is to visit the butterfly house with a naturalist guide to view the beautiful and captivating colours of the various butterflies on show. After dinner take a night walk through the rainforest to uncover the mysteries of the jungle after dark. A canoe ride on the lake to view the spectacled and black caimans with their glowing orange eyes is also a good option after dark as you silently paddle across the lake.

The canopy walkway is 36 metres high and 275 metres long, facilitating a ‘birds eye view’ of all the wonders and beauty the tropical rainforest has to offer.

After the canopy walk, walk the Liana Grande through terra firma and igapo forest habitats, where native guides will explain the many different species of medicinal plants that have been used in their culture for hundreds of years. Return to the lodge for lunch before taking a leisurely hike along the Rio Napo or choose a more challenging hike on the Leoncillo trail to spot the elusive dusky titi monkey. Return to the lodge for a much-deserved rest and enjoy the facilities on offer before enjoying dinner.

Sustainability

Being environmentally accountable is a crucial part of our organisation. Chimu is currently striving towards using less paper, taking several initiatives to do so and tracking our progress along the way. Our goal: A paperless organisation. For this reason, all information given to you will be sent electronically. We encourage those who choose to travel with us to support our aspirations and actions and ask that you reconsider printing out documentation. To view these documents, you can download them to your iPad or portable computer before and during your trip.

Chimu is passionate and dedicated to sustainability measures and understands the crucial part sustainability plays within the tourism industry.

We use local guides and office staff to both maximise local employment opportunities and minimise carbon footprint. Local guides also ensure you benefit from the intimate knowledge, passion and culture of the country you’re visiting. Our guides are all highly qualified (most with university degrees) or equip with many years of experience and are paid above the standard wage. Whether it be our knowledgeable local guides, locally produced meals or the transport on tour, we do not use imported goods when local products are available. We aim to minimise our impact on the environment and give as much back as possible to the communities we work in.

Since 1992, Sacha Lodge is proving that tourism and economic development can be successfully balanced.  One of it's focus is on primatological research observing the behaviour of pygmy marmosets - small monkeys, who are currently in danger due to poaching and illegal trade. Sacha Lodge provides employment to local families and is the largest tourism - sector employer in Ecuador's Amazon region. Here, locals are able to share their knowledge about the locality and environment whilst preventing logging and oil exploration activities. While visiting the many national parks, heritage sites, museums and landmarks our travellers are encouraged to explore whilst remaining culturally aware and sensitive. We further encourage you to buy appropriate souvenirs and discourage the buying of anything wrongfully made or taken from the environment i.e. shells and endangered species products. Information on how you can be environmentally conscious, and travel responsibly will be made available in our Travellers Guides and provided during your travels by guides and staff.
